How To TroubleShoot Your Windows Registry

The Windows registry should be cleaned on a regular basis so that you can work in peace and your PC delivers optimum performance. But there are times when the Windows Registry on your PC might show errors and then the only option you will have is registry troubleshooting.

Registry troubleshooting will take care of any type of problem or error in your Windows registry. You can use some of the advanced software like Registry Easy, RegCure and Error Nuker to help you with registry troubleshooting. Let us look at the some of the common registry problems and their solutions:

Problem#1: Your problem might be quite common like PC shutdown or PC running slow and this is something that can occur on your PC regardless who the user is.

The Solution: This problem is more likely to be confined within HKLM. You have to try and use a registry monitoring utility for monitoring the PC during a specific operation. When the registry monitoring software is working, look out for any “Not Found” or “Access Denied” errors as they will indicate the nature of the problem. You can also boot your PC in the safe mode to find the problem.

Problem#2: If your problem follows the user on your machine rather than your machine then you will need registry troubleshooting.

The Solution: This type of a problem normally exists in HKCU. You need to try the following to remove the error: Ask the user to log off from their workstation. Take a backup of his/her user profile i.e., you need to take a backup of all the content that is there in C:\documents and settings\%username% and then delete the folder or file from C:\documents and Settings. If this user has a roaming profile, then shift it from your server. After which, you can ask the user to log in and at this point he/she will get what is known as the default profile: c:\documents and settings\default user. If the problem doesn’t show up then it means that it is ntuser.dat error.

Problem#3: You or the user of a machine gets an application failure for no reason whatsoever.

The Solution: You will need to use a registry monitoring application for this type of registry troubleshooting. You need to launch the registry monitoring application and look out for the point where the application stops functioning. You can use a built-in filter feature in the monitoring software for filtering the application processes.

Problem#4: You may be one of many users who have been affected by some registry problem simultaneously as other users.

The Solution: There can be several reasons for this and registry troubleshooting will require you to first check if it is a registry related problem or not. You can always use a registry cleaner like RegCure or Registry Easy to scan you PC and determine if there are any errors in your Windows Registry or not. You need to also check if it is a Group Policy issue or not. If the registry scan brings up the error then it will automatically clean it too.
